Vid Kraken vs Apify for YouTube Downloads: Reliability, Cost and Code (2026)
Vid Kraken vs Apify YouTube downloader Actors: 99.99% success vs Apify's published run stats, real costs for 1,000 videos, the same job in code on both, error codes, bulk runs and audio formats.
Vid Kraken · Updated October 17, 2026
Apify is a platform of web data and automation tools. Its Store lists dozens of YouTube downloader Actors, each built, priced and maintained by a different independent developer. Vid Kraken is one managed YouTube download API: you send a URL and get back a direct CDN link to the finished file. Both spare you from running yt-dlp yourself. The difference that matters most is whether your downloads still work next week.
Short version: teams pick Vid Kraken because it keeps working. It completed 99.993% of more than 2.5 million downloads over the last 30 days, and the numbers are public and live. The most-used YouTube downloader Actor on Apify finished 95.7% of its runs in the same period, so about 1 run in 23 failed, timed out or was aborted. If downloading YouTube files is a feature in your product, that gap is the whole decision. Apify is still the better fit if you need transcripts, comments or 4K.
Reliability: why teams switch
YouTube changes its player, its bot checks and its rate limits all the time. Every downloader breaks eventually. What matters is how often it breaks, how long it stays broken, and who fixes it.
Apify publishes 30-day run outcomes for every public Actor. Here are the most-used YouTube downloader Actors next to Vid Kraken, pulled from Apify's API on October 17, 2026:
| Downloader | Volume (30 days) | Success rate | Fails about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vid Kraken API | 2.5M+ downloads | 99.993% | 1 in 14,000 |
| Streamers YouTube Video Downloader (most used) | 269,967 runs | 95.7% | 1 in 23 |
| epctex YouTube Video Downloader | 57,332 runs | 97.2% | 1 in 36 |
| memo23 YouTube Video Downloader | 2,664 runs | 89.0% | 1 in 9 |
| YouTube Audio Downloader (utils) | 4,876 runs | 88.0% | 1 in 8 |
“Succeeded” doesn't mean you got the file
In our tests, about 15% of Apify runs marked succeeded returned a link that timed out or failed when we tried to download it. Applied to the most-used Actor, that takes it from 95.7% to roughly 81% of runs ending in a usable file, so about 1 in 5 fails. Apify's own run stats can't show this, because they never check the link.
Vid Kraken only counts a download as a success once the whole video has been downloaded and the finished file is stored on our CDN, ready to fetch. A link that doesn't work is never counted as a success.
Apify's figures are a best case for the Actors, for two reasons. First, they count runs, not videos, and a run is marked SUCCEEDED even when some of the videos inside it failed. Those failures sit in the dataset as error items. Second, SUCCEEDED only means the Actor finished without crashing. It doesn't check that the link it returned actually downloads. When we tested these Actors, runs marked SUCCEEDED returned links that didn't work: raw YouTube URLs that return 403 Forbidden from any other server, and storage links that had already expired. So the share of videos you can actually download is lower than the table shows. Vid Kraken counts every single video, and a download only counts as completed once the finished file is on our CDN. Failures caused by the video itself (private, removed, age-restricted, members-only, region-locked or still live) are excluded, because no downloader can fetch those. Everything else counts against us.
Why the gap exists:
- One team, one job. Vid Kraken only downloads YouTube, and keeping it working is our full-time job. Most Apify Actors are side projects by independent developers who also maintain dozens of other scrapers. When YouTube ships a change, an Actor stays broken until its developer notices and pushes a fix. Several once-popular YouTube Actors on the Store are now marked deprecated, and when that happens your only option is to migrate to another one.
- Retries that actually route around problems. Crawlee-based Actors expose
maxRequestRetries, which retries the same request through the same method. That helps with flaky connections but not with bot checks or a player change. Vid Kraken retries across multiple download routes and proxy pools, so one blocked route doesn't fail the download. - Fixes land without touching your code. When YouTube changes something, we fix it on our side. Your integration, inputs and outputs stay the same. On Apify, a fix sometimes means a new Actor with a different input schema.
- A failure tells you something. When a Vid Kraken job does fail, it ends with a stable
errorCode, so your app knows whether to retry or tell the user. More on that below.
The reliability page shows daily success rates for the last 7, 30 and 90 days, measured on the same API you'd integrate.
Quick comparison
| Apify YouTube downloader Actors | Vid Kraken | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Third-party Actors on a general scraping platform | One managed YouTube download API |
| Success rate (30 days) | 88–97% of runs marked succeeded on the most-used downloader Actors. That doesn't count failed videos inside those runs, or returned links that don't work | 99.993% of downloads, published live |
| Who fixes breakage | Each Actor's independent developer, on their schedule | Vid Kraken, with no change to your integration |
| Starting price | Free plan with $5 of usage; Starter $19/mo + usage | Starter $99/mo for 400 GB of downloads |
| What you pay for | Set per Actor: per result, per event, rental or platform usage, plus proxy traffic and storage | Bandwidth only, at actual file size (20 MB minimum). Failures are free |
| Workflow | Start an Actor run, wait, read items from its dataset | POST /download, then poll the job or receive a webhook |
| Job state | Per run (SUCCEEDED, FAILED, TIMED-OUT…); per-video errors live inside dataset items | Per video: IN_QUEUE, IN_PROGRESS, COMPLETED or FAILED |
| Error codes | Whatever the Actor's developer chose, often free text | Stable errorCode such as AGE_RESTRICTED or GEO_RESTRICTED |
| Bulk | Many Actors take thousands of URLs in one run | One URL per request, up to 100 jobs in flight per account |
| Output | downloadUrl or storageUrl fields that vary by Actor; some return raw YouTube URLs that expire | downloadUrl on a CDN, plus title, duration, fileSize and actualFormat |
| Storage | Apify's Key-Value Store or the Actor's own storage, often billed per MB per day | The file is delivered from Vid Kraken's CDN. No storage to manage |
| Video quality | Up to 4K on some Actors | 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p |
| Audio | MP3, M4A, Opus or WebM, depending on the Actor | Native M4A/Opus, AAC, or MP3 at 320 kbps |
| Transcripts and comments | Yes, through dedicated scraper Actors | No. Video and audio files only |
| Proxies | Up to you or the Actor; residential traffic is $8/GB on Starter | Built in, never billed separately |
What 1,000 videos actually cost
Take 1,000 ten-minute videos at 1080p. A 1080p video runs about 600 MB per hour, so that's roughly 100 GB of files. Prices below are as listed in October 2026.
| Option | How it bills | Cost for 1,000 videos |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-per-result Actor (e.g. a popular 4.9★ downloader) | $0.05 per run + $0.02 per result on paid plans | ~$20, if you download each file within about 15 minutes |
| Same Actor, files kept for 7 days | + $0.0005 per MB per day of storage | ~$370 |
| Usage-billed Actor that pulls video through Apify residential proxy | Compute + $8/GB of proxy traffic on Starter | $800+ |
| Vid Kraken Actor on Apify | ~$2/GB | ~$200 |
| Vid Kraken API, Starter | $99/mo for 400 GB | $99, with 300 GB left over |
Two things stand out. First, the cheap rows are prices per attempt, not per delivered file. At a 4% failure rate, 40 of every 1,000 videos need a rerun, someone has to find them in the dataset, and anything you built on top waits. Second, the price swings by 40x depending on which Actor you pick and how it fetches the bytes. Before you commit to an Actor, check whether it routes the video itself through Apify Proxy. If it does, residential proxy traffic will cost far more than the Actor's listed price.
Vid Kraken's cost moves with one number, the gigabytes of files you actually receive. Failed downloads, polling, metadata lookups and checks on your balance are all free. Starter is $0.25/GB, Growth is $399/mo for 2 TB ($0.20/GB), and Scale is $1,499/mo for 10 TB ($0.15/GB). See pricing for overage rates and custom plans.
The same job in code
Here is one 1080p download on each.
Apify, using apify-client and a pay-per-result Actor. The input fields and output fields are specific to this Actor. Swap the Actor and you rewrite both.
import { ApifyClient } from "apify-client";
const client = new ApifyClient({ token: process.env.APIFY_TOKEN });
// Starts a run and waits for it to finish.
const run = await client.actor("api-ninja/youtube-video-downloader").call({
urls: ["https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ"],
format: "1080", // check the Actor's input schema for exact values
});
// run.status is "SUCCEEDED" even if some videos inside the run failed,
// so check every item.
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
for (const item of items) {
console.log(item.status, item.downloadUrl); // temporary link, ~15 min
}
Vid Kraken. The request and response shapes are the same for every video.
const headers = {
Authorization: "Bearer " + process.env.VIDKRAKEN_API_KEY,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
};
const job = await fetch("https://vidkraken.com/api/v2/download", {
method: "POST",
headers,
body: JSON.stringify({ url: "https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ", format: "1080" }),
}).then((r) => r.json());
// Poll, or pass webhookUrl above and skip this loop entirely.
let status;
do {
await new Promise((r) => setTimeout(r, 3000));
status = await fetch(
"https://vidkraken.com/api/v2/download/" + job.jobId,
{ headers },
).then((r) => r.json());
} while (status.status === "IN_QUEUE" || status.status === "IN_PROGRESS");
if (status.status === "COMPLETED") console.log(status.downloadUrl, status.fileSize);
else console.log(status.errorCode); // e.g. "AGE_RESTRICTED"
With a webhookUrl, Vid Kraken POSTs the final status to you. It's signed with X-VidKraken-Signature, and if your endpoint doesn't return a 2xx it retries 10 times over about 4 hours. Jobs also report live progress (stage, percent, bytes) while they run, which is handy for showing a progress bar to your users.
Job states and failure handling
This is where the two differ most in production.
An Apify run has a status: READY, RUNNING, SUCCEEDED, FAILED, TIMED-OUT or ABORTED. But a run that downloads 500 videos can be SUCCEEDED with 40 of them failed. Those failures show up inside dataset items, as fields like status, error or resultType: "error", worded however the Actor's developer chose. Your code has to parse each Actor's error format, and parse it again if you switch Actors.
Vid Kraken tracks a job per video, and every failed job carries a stable errorCode. Except for NETWORK_ERROR, every code describes the video itself, so retrying won't help. Here's what to do with each one:
errorCode | What happened | What your app should do |
|---|---|---|
AGE_RESTRICTED | YouTube requires sign-in to view it | Tell the user the video is age-restricted |
MEMBERS_ONLY | Restricted to channel members | Tell the user, don't retry |
PRIVATE_VIDEO | The video is private | Tell the user, don't retry |
GEO_RESTRICTED | Not available in the server's region | Tell the user it's region-locked |
VIDEO_NOT_FOUND | Deleted, or the ID is wrong | Ask for a different link |
LIVE_STREAM_IN_PROGRESS | Still live | Retry after the stream ends |
VIDEO_PREMIERE | Scheduled premiere, not aired yet | Retry after it airs |
VIDEO_PROCESSING | YouTube is still processing the upload | Retry later |
FORMAT_UNAVAILABLE | That quality isn't offered | Request a lower format |
FILE_TOO_LARGE | Too big in this format | Use a lower quality or trim with startTime / endTime |
DRM_PROTECTED, PAYMENT_REQUIRED, COPYRIGHTED_MUSIC, NO_DOWNLOAD_OPT_OUT | Can't be downloaded | Tell the user, don't retry |
NETWORK_ERROR | Transient failure on Vid Kraken's side | Retry after a short backoff |
Age-restricted, members-only and private videos are the ones to plan for. Many Apify Actors handle them by asking you for YouTube cookies from a logged-in account. That works until the account gets flagged. Vid Kraken doesn't use logged-in accounts. It returns AGE_RESTRICTED right away, so you can show the right message instead of waiting on a run that was never going to work. The full list is in the API docs.
Bulk downloads
Apify is better at one big batch: many Actors take thousands of URLs as a single JSON array in one run. Vid Kraken takes one URL per request, and each account can have up to 100 downloads queued or running at once. Beyond that, POST /download returns 429 until some finish.
In practice you submit jobs in a loop with a webhookUrl, and Vid Kraken calls you back as each one finishes. One video failing doesn't hold up the others, and you don't have to wait for a whole batch to finish before using the first file.
Download links and storage
This is the most common surprise with Apify YouTube Actors. Some return YouTube's own googlevideo.com media URLs. Those are signed for the IP that requested them and expire within minutes to hours, so downloading from another server often fails with 403 Forbidden. Others store the file and return a temporary link, often valid for about 15 minutes, and charge per MB per day if you want the file kept longer.
A completed Vid Kraken job returns a downloadUrl on its CDN that works from any server. It comes with fileSize, duration and actualFormat, which tells you if a lower quality was delivered because the one you asked for wasn't available.
Audio and multi-language tracks
On Apify, audio support depends on the Actor. Some deliver real MP3, while others quietly hand you M4A when you asked for MP3.
Vid Kraken has three audio options:
audiois the best stream YouTube serves, usually M4A (AAC) or WebM (Opus) at 130–160 kbps, with no re-encoding.audio-aacprefers YouTube's AAC stream when one exists, for pipelines calibrated on AAC.audio-mp3is always a real MP3 at 320 kbps CBR, keeping the source's sample rate and channels.
For videos with dubbed audio, call POST /info with includeAudioTracks: true to list the original and dubbed languages. Then pass language (for example es or en-US) on the download. If that track doesn't exist, it falls back to the closest match, then to the original audio. This is useful for media teams pulling the same video in several languages. More on audio in the YouTube to MP3 API guide.
When Apify is the better pick
- You need transcripts, comments or channel data. Apify has dedicated scraper Actors for these, and Vid Kraken only delivers files.
- You need 4K. Vid Kraken tops out at 1080p.
- YouTube is one source among many and you already run scrapers for other sites on Apify.
When Vid Kraken is the better pick
- Downloads are a feature in your product. A 4% failure rate or a deprecated Actor is an outage for your users. Vid Kraken runs at 99.99% and publishes the numbers.
- You need to tell users why a video failed, using
errorCodevalues rather than parsing free-text errors. - You want costs you can forecast: one per-GB rate, and failures are free.
- You need links that work from any server, not IP-bound YouTube URLs.
Already on Apify? Vid Kraken is there too
The Vid Kraken Actor runs the same download API from inside the Apify Store, billed through your Apify account at about $2/GB. It uses the same request and response shapes, so you can start there and move to the direct API later, which is about 90% cheaper. Only authentication changes.

Is Vid Kraken more reliable than Apify for YouTube downloads?+
Yes. Vid Kraken completed 99.993% of downloads over the last 30 days, and publishes daily success rates at vidkraken.com/reliability. On Apify, the most-used YouTube downloader Actor finished 95.7% of its runs in the same period, and others ranged from 88% to 97%. Apify counts runs rather than videos, and a run counts as succeeded even if some videos in it failed or the links it returned don't work, so the real rate of usable downloads is lower still.
Is Vid Kraken an alternative to Apify for YouTube downloads?+
Yes. Apify is a general web data platform where independent developers publish YouTube downloader Actors, each with its own inputs, outputs and pricing. Vid Kraken is a single managed YouTube download API that returns a direct CDN link to the finished file, with built-in proxy rotation, retries and machine-readable error codes.
How much does Apify cost for YouTube downloads?+
Apify's Starter plan is $19/month plus usage, and each YouTube Actor sets its own price on top. For 1,000 ten-minute 1080p videos, a pay-per-result Actor costs about $20 if you download each file within minutes. Storing those files for a week adds about $350, and an Actor that pulls video through residential proxy can cost $800 or more at $8/GB. Vid Kraken's Starter plan is $99/month for 400 GB, which covers about 4,000 such videos.
Is Vid Kraken cheaper than Apify?+
Usually, once you count everything. Vid Kraken is cheaper than usage-billed Actors that route video through residential proxy, and than any Actor once you pay to store files. The cheapest pay-per-result Actors list a lower price per run, but that price is per attempt, so failed and timed-out runs still have to be found and rerun. Vid Kraken charges only for gigabytes of files you receive, and failed downloads are never charged.
How does Vid Kraken handle age-restricted videos compared to Apify?+
Vid Kraken does not use logged-in YouTube accounts, so it fails age-restricted videos right away with the errorCode AGE_RESTRICTED. Your app can then show the right message. Apify Actors vary: some ask for YouTube cookies from a logged-in account, which works until that account is flagged, and others fail with a free-text error.
Can I download thousands of YouTube videos at once with Vid Kraken?+
Yes, but one request per URL. Each account can have up to 100 downloads queued or in progress, and you can pass a webhookUrl so Vid Kraken calls you as each job finishes. Many Apify Actors instead accept thousands of URLs in a single run.
Does Vid Kraken return YouTube transcripts or comments?+
No. Vid Kraken delivers video and audio files plus basic metadata like title, duration and available audio languages. For transcripts, comments or channel analytics, an Apify YouTube scraper Actor is the better tool.
Can I use Vid Kraken from Apify?+
Yes. Vid Kraken publishes the YouTube Video & Audio Downloader - Reliable Actor on the Apify Store at about $2/GB. It uses the same request and response shapes as the direct API, so moving to the cheaper direct API later only changes authentication.
Why do Apify YouTube download links fail on my server?+
Many Actors return YouTube's own googlevideo.com media URLs, which are tied to the IP that requested them and expire within minutes to hours. Downloading them from a different server often returns 403 Forbidden. Others return temporary storage links that expire after about 15 minutes unless you pay for storage. Vid Kraken returns a CDN link that works from any server.
